ANZFSS Executive

The ANZFSS Executive is:

President: Professor James CURRAN, The University of Auckland (since 2020)

James works at the University of Auckland in the Department of Statistics. His area of interest is broadly in statistical problems in forensic science. He has published widely on DNA and glass, especially in the areas of interpretation. A list of recent journal publications can be found here.

Vice-President: Mrs Alison SEARS, Forensic & Analytical Science Service, NSW Government (since 2016)

Alison is a Senior Forensic Biologist in the Case Management Unit, NSW Forensic and Analytical Science Service (NSW FASS). Operationally, she is involved with the analysis and reporting of DNA testing for criminal and coronial matters including DVI, as well as providing expert evidence to the Courts of NSW. Alison is an experienced bloodstain pattern analyst, is a certified trainer and assessor, and strongly involved with many facets of industry-related research, development and teaching.

Vice-President (New Zealand): Rachel NICKERSON (since 2020)

After a short stint as a secondary science teacher in the Bay of Plenty Rachel returned to university to complete a Master of Science majoring in Forensic Science. While finishing her thesis in 2003, she began her career with NZ Police, as a civilian Crime Scene Attendant (Assistant SOCO). She completed the SOCO training course, Royal New Zealand Police College (RNZPC), and was successfully appointed SOCO Level 1 based in Auckland City District. 

Rachel completed the Diploma in Crime Scene Examination in 2013 progressing to SOCO Level 2 before promoting to District Forensic Supervisor, Auckland City District in 2014. She completed the NZQA Level 4 Adult Education Certification and in mid-2019 was appointed to the newly created position of Crime Scene Trainer, RNZPC, and made the move to Wellington. Rachel is currently updating the SOCO training programme with the move to a virtual classroom as well as face-to-face problem based learning, to ensure our training is accessible, relevant, consistent and authentic.

Treasurer: Ms Natasha MITCHELL, Forensic Science SA (since 2019)

Natasha is the Science Leader at Evidence Recovery, Forensic Science SA where she manages a team of 11 forensic officers responsible for the examination and recovery of evidence from crime exhibits. She is also a Senior Forensic Biologist undertaking DNA analysis of evidence from serious complex criminal casework and provides opinion evidence in South Australian courts. Natasha is also an Army Reservist posted to Unrecovered War Casualties Army where she undertakes DNA analysis for the purpose of identifying remains of Australian Soldiers from past historical conflicts.

Secretary: Mrs Melissa AIRLIE, Queensland Police Service (since 2020)

Melissa is a Sergeant/Scientific Officer at the Major Crime Unit of the Queensland Police Service. She is also a PhD researcher in forensic hair analysis at the University of Canberra and a sessional lecturer in forensics at the Queensland University of Technology.
